Richmond Walk: Self-Guided Route
Suggested walk through Richmond’s riverside and surrounding landscapes
Richmond, South West London
Leafy, villagey, and full of space to roam, Richmond has long been a favourite for Londoners looking to slow down. This is where elegant town meets wild riverside, where deer roam just beyond the high street, and where the day often drifts from walking to lounging without much effort. This walk is especially lovely on a sunny day.
Begin at Richmond Green (map)
A peaceful open space framed by old pubs and Georgian houses. Nearby side streets, like Brewers Lane and Paved Court, are full of cafés, wine bars, and small shops. A great place to grab coffee and ease into the day.
Head to the riverside (map)
Just a few minutes downhill, this stretch along the Thames buzzes with locals, especially around Scott’s, where people perch with pints or ice cream. Easygoing and full of life when the sun’s out.
Rent a boat near Richmond Bridge
Below the bridge, you can hire rowboats. The river here is calm and scenic, great for first-timers or slow gliding with friends.
Walk upriver along the Thames Path (map)
Follow the water toward Petersham. It’s flat, quiet, and packed with views—fields, boats, trees, and weekend walkers. A breezy, low-effort stretch of London nature.
Climb to the viewpoint (map)
Turn into Terrace Gardens and make your way up the hill. At the top, you’ll find Richmond’s most famous view—wide skies, sweeping river, and plenty of space to sit with a drink or snack.

• Petersham Nurseries: stay riverside and follow the meadows to this hidden celeb-favourite café and plant haven.
Keep going, if you’re still up for it
Walk on to Ham House (map), a 17th-century mansion with riverside gardens. Or hop across the river on the tiny ferry (map) to Marble Hill Park, a two-minute ride that feels like a detour in the best way.
