Hampstead Walk: Self-Guided Route

Suggested route for exploring the historic village and heath

Hampstead, North West London

Hampstead feels like a quiet hilltop town, even though it’s still Zone 2. Cobbled lanes, wood-framed houses, and winding footpaths give it a countryside feel—but with London landmarks never far off. This walk blends village charm with wild green space of Hampstead Heath, and works well as a meander with stops.

Tip: the full route is quite long, so it’s best to pick and choose the parts you’re in the mood for.

Start in the village (map)
Begin near Hampstead Station and take time to explore the High Street and Flask Walk. The High Street has plenty of pubs, bakeries, and boutiques, while Flask Walk is narrow, cobbled, and full of local charm. A great area to grab a coffee or browse before heading to the Heath.

Optional detour through quiet lanes (map)
Before entering the Heath, loop around Church Row, Holly Mount, and Hampstead Grove for a peaceful wander through these quiet, characterful streets. You’ll also pass The Holly Bush, a charming 18th-century pub with a cosy, local vibe.

Climb to Parliament Hill (map)
Enter the Heath and head up to one of London’s most iconic viewpoints. On clear days, you can spot the whole skyline. It’s a favourite local spot for picnics, kite flying, and soaking up the breeze.

Choose a path across Hampstead Heath
There’s no single route here—just follow your instincts across fields, ponds, and shaded trails. Options include:

  • A detour past the swimming ponds (map)
  • A walk through Kenwood House grounds (map) — lush, landscaped, and dotted with art
  • A loop around the wooded areas near Viaduct Bridge or the Hill Garden and Pergola (map) for something a bit more romantic and secluded

Stop for something to eat
Head toward Spaniards Inn (map), a centuries-old pub on the edge of the Heath with a leafy garden (booking a table is recommended). Or loop back into the village for gastropubs and bakeries—there’s no shortage.
